A More Practical Way to Transport Fertility Samples

Portable cryogenic transport designed to connect sample collection with specialist storage

Fertility samples may need to travel from a collection location to a fertility clinic or laboratory equipped for long-term cryogenic storage.

When these locations are far apart, the process can involve specialist equipment, careful coordination, and strict handling requirements.

CryoBioVault is developing a compact cryogenic transport solution intended to make this part of the process more practical.

The Challenge We Aim to Solve

Traditional equipment can be bulky

Many conventional cryogenic transport containers are designed for institutional or larger-scale use. Their size, cost, and handling requirements may make them less convenient for single-sample transport.

Collection and storage may happen in different places

Not every collection point has the facilities needed for long-term cryogenic storage. Samples may need to be transferred to a specialist laboratory or fertility clinic.

Sample tracking matters

Healthcare professionals need clear procedures for identifying samples, documenting handovers, and checking that the correct sample has arrived.

Transport information can be valuable

Documenting the conditions experienced during transit can help professionals review the transport process and maintain appropriate records.

Introducing the CryoBioVault Concept

CryoBioVault is being developed around a simple idea: make cryogenic fertility sample transport more portable and easier to manage.

1. Compact and Portable Design

The proposed design targets a lightweight, hand-luggage-sized format intended to be easier to handle than many traditional industrial dry shippers.

2. Cryogenic Temperature Protection

A vacuum-insulated core using liquid-nitrogen-based cryogenic technology is intended to support the very low temperatures required by the planned transport application.

The current design target is a transport window of up to 48 hours without external power, subject to the final validated performance specifications.

3. Sample Identification and Verification

QR-coded identification and tamper-evident sealing are planned to help authorised personnel check sample identity and support documented handovers.

4. Optional Temperature Monitoring

An optional temperature logger is being considered to record conditions during transport and help support professional review of the journey.

How the Proposed Process Works

Step 1 — Prepare: The authorised clinic or laboratory prepares the sample and transport container according to the approved procedure.

Step 2 — Secure: The sample is placed in the designated container, with the appropriate identification and documentation.

Step 3 — Transport: The container is moved to the receiving facility using an approved transport process.

Step 4 — Verify: The receiving professional checks the sample identification, seal, documentation, and any available temperature records.

Step 5 — Transfer to storage: The receiving facility handles the sample according to its established clinical procedures.

The exact workflow will depend on the final product specifications, applicable regulations, and the procedures of the participating healthcare facilities.

Who Could Benefit?

  • Fertility clinics: A potential additional option for coordinating sample transfers.
  • Andrology laboratories: A proposed solution for single-sample transport and receiving checks.
  • Hospitals: Potential support for fertility-preservation pathways that involve transfers between facilities.
  • Specialist medical couriers: A compact transport concept designed around specialist sample logistics.
  • Fertility preservation services: A potential way to connect collection locations with facilities equipped for cryogenic storage.

Designed Around a Specific Need

CryoBioVault is not intended to replace every type of cryogenic transport equipment. Its development focuses on the particular challenges of portable, single-sample fertility transport.

Our goal is simple: make the journey from collection to specialist storage easier to coordinate, document, and manage.
